Pyrocumulonimbus: The Deadly Fire-Generated Thunderstorm Changing Our World

So, what we’re seeing in Spain and France now are flames exceeding a hundred meters, so these are 30-story-tall flames. These are — you can’t respond to these in a meaningful way with water. It’s not every day you meet a leader who changes the course of your life. For me, that moment came in 1999 at Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles. As a high school senior, I had the distinct honor of meeting Al Gore. Hearing him speak about the climate emergency, and later experiencing his documentary An Inconvenient Truth, ignited a passion that has shaped my advocacy for over two decades.

That early inspiration is the exact reason I recently pursued a run for Congress, advocating for a Green Marshall Plan that includes a monthly Universal Basic Income. I firmly believe that we can, and must, address the economic and environmental challenges facing us today.

Madrid holds a special place in my heart from my time living there as a student, so the devastating news of the fires in Spain and France cuts terribly close to home. These disasters are a stark reminder of the reality of our climate crisis. We are seeing firsthand the destructive power of unchecked forces, yet it is not too late to shift our course for a more sustainable future.

Pyrocumulonimbus: The New Face of Wildfire Threats

In the summer of 2024, a term few outside the scientific community had heard entered the global lexicon: pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb), or a fire-generated thunderstorm. These rare and terrifying phenomena occur when the heat from an intense wildfire creates its own towering thundercloud, sometimes reaching over 16 kilometers (10 miles) into the atmosphere. These storms are so powerful they can generate lightning, hurricane-force winds, and even their own weather systems—further fueling the very fires that created them.

The recent wildfires in Spain and France have made the dangers of pyrocumulonimbus clouds painfully clear. According to John Vaillant in his award-winning book Fire Weather, flames have been observed reaching over 100 meters—taller than a 30-story building. Water bomber pilots have watched, helpless, as thousands of gallons of water evaporate before ever reaching the flames. These fires are so hot and so large that traditional firefighting methods are rendered useless. The only real defense becomes evacuation and, ultimately, prevention (Vaillant, 2023).

Why Are We Seeing Pyrocumulonimbus More Often?

The climate crisis is intensifying wildfires across the globe. Longer droughts, higher temperatures, and shifting weather patterns have created the perfect conditions for megafires. In Europe, 2023 and 2024 brought record-breaking heat waves and parched landscapes, setting the stage for wildfires of a kind once thought possible only in Australia or California (European Commission, 2024).

Pyrocumulonimbus clouds are a grim marker of this new era. Unlike ordinary wildfires, fires that generate their own weather are virtually impossible to control. The clouds they form can loft smoke and ash into the stratosphere, impacting air quality thousands of miles away (NASA Earth Observatory, 2023). In some cases, pyroCbs have even affected weather patterns on a continental scale, blocking sunlight and contributing to erratic temperature swings.

What Can We Do—And Why There’s Still Hope

The scale of these fires is daunting, but we are not powerless. History reminds us that collective action can move mountains. The climate movement has already driven governments and industries to adopt cleaner energy, invest in resilience, and build global awareness. But we must do more—and we must do it together.
