From Oregon to Nevada: Why Mass Violence Demands Action

Friends,

Over the weekend, news of another tragic mass shooting in Oregon broke my heart. It is a devastating reminder that our communities continue to pay the price for legislative inaction. As I reflect on this latest tragedy and what it will take to make our neighborhoods safe, I wanted to share some thoughts with you in today’s newsletter about how we can finally turn the tide on gun violence.

The Australian Model for Gun Control

When I look at global policy, the Australian approach to gun reform stands out as a clear demonstration of how targeted policy can fundamentally alter public safety outcomes. Key elements of their success include:

  • Ban on high-risk weaponry: Australian authorities recognized that certain firearm categories, such as semiautomatic and assault-style weapons, are designed for mass harm and prohibited civilian ownership entirely.

  • Comprehensive background checks: Moving beyond simple criminal record searches, their system incorporated qualitative assessments—such as character references and input from personal networks—to better identify potential risk factors.

  • Bipartisan political will: By setting aside political division, the Australian government secured agreement across various states and territories within a short timeframe, effectively overriding the resistance of vocal gun lobbies.

The Contrast with U.S. Policy

It is frustrating to contrast Australia's progress with the significant challenges we face here in the United States. Despite the clear statistical success in Australia—where gun violence decreased by 50% since the reforms—our own efforts remain stifled by systemic gridlock.

  • Legislative barriers: Leaders like State Senator Geraldine Thompson emphasize that powerful lobbying groups often maintain a "lock" on federal progress. This forces advocates to fight defensive battles at the state level just to block dangerous policies like open carry or campus gun access.

  • Expert collaboration: I firmly believe that effective policy must be grounded in the findings of public health and crime prevention experts, rather than dictated by the interests of specialized lobbies.

Looking Forward

Deep-seated "gun culture" is a significant obstacle to change, but it is not an absolute barrier. Through bipartisan unity and a commitment to prioritizing public safety over political expediency, Australia successfully curbed gun violence. Their journey serves as both a historical example and a direct challenge to our current legislative efforts to close loopholes and enact comprehensive safety measures.

As a candidate for Congress in 2028, I pledge that if elected, I will closely study the ongoing success of Australia's gun reform policies and examine the latest advancements in smart gun technology. My commitment to you is to pursue evidence-based solutions that prioritize both public safety and responsible gun ownership—ensuring our approach reflects both proven international models and innovative technologies.

In Solidarity,
