Economic Justice and Islamic Values – Daily Newsletter for Nevada’s CD-02

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to today’s edition of our campaign newsletter! As we journey through the sacred month of Ramadan and approach the pivotal 2026 Primary Election, I want to reflect on the powerful intersection between economic justice, Islamic values, and our vision for Nevada’s future. Today’s message centers on why Universal Basic Income (UBI) – or what I call a “Citizens Dividend” – isn’t just an economic policy, but a moral imperative rooted in compassion, justice, and a tradition that speaks to all faiths and backgrounds.

Why Universal Basic Income Aligns with Islamic Values: A Ramadan Reflection

At the heart of Islam is the concept of Zakat, one of the Five Pillars, which mandates the redistribution of wealth to those in need. This isn’t simply charity – it’s a recognition that the blessings of prosperity are not meant to be hoarded, but shared. Zakat is a reminder that wealth ultimately belongs to God, and those who are fortunate have a duty to support their community.

In many ways, a Citizens Dividend operates on the same principle: our state’s vast resources – from minerals to the productivity of our people – are a collective inheritance, and every Nevadan deserves a fair share.

But Islamic tradition goes even further. Sadaqah, the voluntary act of giving, is encouraged year-round, and especially during Ramadan, as a way to foster continuous compassion. What if our economic system itself reflected this spirit of ongoing generosity? A Nevada Permanent Fund, modeled after Alaska’s successful approach, could provide a guaranteed stream of income to every resident. This isn’t a handout. It’s a recognition that all of us contribute to our state’s prosperity and should benefit from it.

Economic justice is a Quranic imperative. The Quran warns against the hoarding of wealth and urges that prosperity should circulate, not stagnate. “And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah – give them tidings of a painful punishment.” (Quran 9:34) Universal Basic Income directly addresses growing inequality, ensuring that everyone – regardless of background or circumstance – has a foundation of security and dignity.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: An Islamic Duty and a Human Right

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Poverty is almost disbelief.” When people are trapped in economic hardship, it’s not just their material well-being at risk, but their ability to participate fully in spiritual and community life. By guaranteeing a basic income floor, we empower Nevadans to focus on family, faith, education, and civic contribution rather than mere survival. This isn’t just about economics – it’s about human dignity.

Why Nevada Needs a Citizens Dividend Now

Nevada is rich in resources – from mining to tourism, our economy generates billions each year. And yet, too many families struggle with rising housing costs, healthcare expenses, and insecurity. It’s time to ensure that our state’s prosperity benefits everyone, not just the wealthy or big corporations. Alaska has shown us this model works: since 1982, every Alaskan resident has received an annual dividend from oil revenues. Nevada can do the same, drawing from our diverse economic base to fund a Citizens Dividend that uplifts every community.

A Call to Action This Ramadan

Ramadan is a time for reflection, compassion, and renewed commitment to justice. These values are universal, transcending sect or faith tradition. As you break your fast this month, I encourage you to ask: What kind of economy truly reflects our highest ideals? How can we build a Nevada where prosperity is shared and dignity is protected?

Key Election Dates:

  • Early Voting: May 23 – June 5, 2026

  • Primary Election: Tuesday, June 9, 2026

The primary election is arguably more important than the general – it determines who will challenge Mark Amodei and shape the future of Nevada’s CD-02. I am running as the only independent Democrat committed to universal policies, including UBI, because economic justice isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a human one. Whether you’re Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or of any or no faith, I believe we all deserve an economy built on compassion and dignity.

Let’s Build an Economy Worthy of Our Ideals

Join us in this movement. Vote for a Nevada Citizens Dividend. Vote for economic justice. Vote for universal policies that reflect our shared values. Together, we can create a Nevada where everyone has the opportunity to live with honor and security.

With gratitude, Gamaliel “Gamy” Zavala Enriquez Candidate for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District
