Motown of the 21st Century: Nevada’s Role in the Electric Vehicle Revolution and Universal Basic Income
Happy Father’s Day! Today is extra special for me, as I prepare to welcome my first child into this world – a world on the cusp of remarkable transformation. As I head to Reno’s classic car show, I can’t help but reflect on the legacy of iconic American vehicles, the role of visionary cities like Detroit, and the bright, electrified future we are building here in Northern Nevada.
For decades, Motown was synonymous with innovation, opportunity, and the American Dream. The gleaming Cadillacs, Mustangs, and Impalas that rolled off Detroit’s assembly lines didn’t just transport people – they transported generations into the middle class. They became symbols of possibility, pride, and progress. Today, as I look at those classic cars, I see not just nostalgia but a roadmap for what we can achieve in Nevada with a new kind of vehicle, a new kind of industry, and a new kind of shared prosperity.
Nevada’s Lithium Loop: The Engine of the Electric Revolution
The 21st century belongs to those who lead the next great industrial revolution – and that revolution is electric. Nevada’s unique natural resources, particularly the so-called “Lithium Loop,” are positioning our state as a powerhouse for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Lithium is the lifeblood of EV batteries, and Northern Nevada sits atop some of the world’s richest deposits. We are already home to Tesla’s Gigafactory and a growing constellation of battery, mining, and renewable energy companies. But the story doesn’t stop with Tesla.
A new generation of electric vehicle brands – from Rivian to Lucid, from global giants to homegrown startups – are setting their sights on Nevada. We have the talent, the technology, and the tenacity to become the Motown of the 21st century: a place where not just cars, but dreams and opportunities are built. Imagine, a century from now, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathering at car shows across Nevada, marveling at classic electric vehicles that rolled off assembly lines right here.
A Green Marshall Plan: Funding Universal Basic Income Through a Nevada Permanent Fund
But my vision goes beyond industry. The Green Marshall Plan I propose is about ensuring that the wealth generated by Nevada’s EV and renewable energy boom doesn’t just enrich a handful of companies – it lifts all Nevadans. Through a Nevada Permanent Fund, seeded by the profits and royalties from the lithium, battery, and clean energy sectors, we can establish a universal basic income (UBI) for every resident. This is not just a moral imperative – it is our right. Taxpayers have been the backbone of the EV and renewable revolution, supporting infrastructure, research, and incentives that have made Nevada a global leader.
As the world pivots from fossil fuels to clean, green transportation, it is only fair that those who made this transition possible – Nevada’s workers, families, and communities – receive their fair share. Just as Alaskans benefit from their oil dividend, Nevadans deserve a stake in the industries reshaping our future. UBI funded by a Nevada Permanent Fund would provide economic security, reward innovation, and unleash a new wave of creativity and entrepreneurship in our state.
Celebrating the Past, Building the Future
Today, as I walk among the classic Chevys and Fords at Reno’s car show, I will be reminded of the power of community, the pride of craftsmanship, and the promise of progress. The vehicles that once defined the American middle class were more than machines; they were vehicles of hope. In the same way, the electric vehicles being developed in Nevada today can define a new era of prosperity – for us, for our children, and for generations yet unborn.
This Father’s Day, as I prepare to become a father myself, I am filled with hope and resolve. The future is not something that happens to us – it is something we build, together. If you believe in change, you must fight for it. You must be the change that you want to see in the world. As Nelson Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Let’s make history, not just for ourselves, but for every Nevadan, and for all those who will come after us. Share this newsletter. Subscribe. Join the movement. Together, we can turn Nevada into the Motown of the electric vehicle revolution and guarantee a fair share of prosperity for all.
Happy Father’s Day!
With hope for the future,
