Celebrating True Freedom on the 250th Fourth of July – A Green Marshall Plan for All
Just a few nights ago, a significant part of Washoe County experienced a blackout caused by a fire. As we approach July 4th, 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence, it’s worth reflecting on what true freedom means today. The Founders dreamed of liberty and democracy, but now, our greatest threats are economic inequality, dependence on fossil fuels, and the power of special interests. Elon Musk, for example, recently became a trillionaire—thanks in large part to taxpayer support for technology and innovation. To honor our revolutionary spirit, it’s time for a bold new breakthrough: a Green Marshall Plan for all.
A Green Marshall Plan: Building the Future Together
Imagine a plan as ambitious as the original Marshall Plan, spearheaded by the United States to rebuild Europe after World War II—but this time, focused on America, our planet, and our people. My Green Marshall Plan would invest in every community, starting with the creation of a Nevada Permanent Fund—modeled after Alaska’s successful dividend program—and provide direct monthly payments of $1,300 to every resident. This is not a handout, but a citizens’ dividend: an investment in people, funded by those who have profited most from our shared resources—the billionaires of Big Tech, Big Mining, and Big Energy, who for too long have not paid their fair share.
Democracy in Action: Solar, Wind, and Shared Prosperity
The Green Marshall Plan would make rooftop solar panels available for every home, business, and apartment building—cost-free to Americans, subsidized by Elon Musk himself. Just as the Rural Electrification Act brought power to every corner of America, this initiative would deliver clean, renewable energy nationwide. If we had Powerwalls, solar panels, and other renewable technologies, we could be independent, self-reliant, and protected from events like the Washoe County blackout. Having worked at Tesla, I know this technology inside and out. This is what I ran on as an independent Democratic candidate—it’s a core part of the Green Marshall Plan. Your rooftop could power your life and generate surplus electricity—exported to the grid and earning you a check each month. Renters would benefit too, as landlords participate and share the proceeds. Wind turbines, designed to blend into the local landscape, would further boost our clean energy supply, creating jobs and beautifying our surroundings.
This is democracy at work: not only the right to vote, but also the right to share in our nation’s prosperity. Economic freedom means real choices, and a guaranteed income—a National UBI—puts power directly in the people’s hands. The Nevada Permanent Fund can serve as a model for every state, scaled up until all Americans receive their fair share.
Ending Fossil Fuel Dependence and Perpetual War
For decades, fossil fuel lobbies have held our economy and politics hostage, driving us into cycles of conflict and environmental degradation. The Green Marshall Plan breaks this stranglehold. By investing in renewable infrastructure and direct payments, we can end our dependence on oil and gas, create millions of green jobs, and build a sustainable future.
This isn’t just an American project—it can reach from Argentina to Canada and Greenland, inspiring a new era of international cooperation. As the U.S. leads, we can help the world move beyond fossil fuels and create global prosperity and stability.
True Freedom for the 21st Century
What better way to honor our nation’s 250th birthday than by embracing a vision of freedom that is truly democratic, inclusive, and rooted in justice? American revolutionary Thomas Paine called for a citizens’ dividend in “Agrarian Justice”—recognizing the wealth of the land belongs to all. Today, we can fulfill that promise by making every American a stakeholder in our clean energy future.
A Green Marshall Plan is bold, but so was our Revolution. This Fourth of July, let’s commit to a new declaration of independence—one that liberates us from fossil fuels, economic insecurity, and the stranglehold of special interests. Let’s make the next 250 years a testament to the enduring power of democracy, innovation, and shared prosperity.
Happy Independence Day to all!
