The Urgency of Now: Tackling Climate and Inequality Together

We stand at a critical crossroads in our nation’s history. The challenges before us are not theoretical or distant; they are pressing down on our communities with unrelenting force. From extreme weather events displacing families to skyrocketing costs of living that leave hardworking Americans behind, our current trajectory is unsustainable.
This situation calls for bold, decisive action. The intersecting crises of climate change and economic inequality share a common root and demand an unprecedented level of urgency. We must look past partisan divides and face reality: the extreme concentration of wealth in the hands of the top 1% is driving both crises at the direct expense of the 99%.
The Twin Crises: Climate and Inequality
At first glance, economic inequality and the climate emergency might seem like separate issues. One is measured in bank accounts, wages, and housing costs; the other in carbon parts per million, rising sea levels, and scorching summer temperatures. However, they are deeply intertwined.
The same corporate structures and economic policies that concentrate wealth among a tiny fraction of the population also drive unchecked fossil fuel dependency and environmental degradation. The 1% profits from an extractive economic model that externalizes costs onto our communities and our planet.
When extreme wealth is concentrated at the top, regular families are stripped of their economic resilience. When a climate disaster strikes, it is disproportionately working-class neighborhoods and vulnerable communities that bear the brunt of the devastation—often lacking the resources to rebuild. We cannot solve one of these crises without addressing the other. Both threaten our collective survival, and both require structural reform of the highest order.
A Vision for Structural Reform: The Freedom Dividend and the Green Marshall Plan
To meet the magnitude of these challenges, incremental changes will no longer suffice. We need a fundamental reimagining of how our economy serves its people.
Imagine a system where every American is guaranteed a financial floor beneath which they cannot fall. By instituting a national basic income—often called a Freedom Dividend—we can provide direct, unconditional relief to families across the country. This isn't just about alleviating poverty; it is about recognizing the inherent dignity of every citizen and giving people the breathing room to adapt, retrain, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
How do we pay for such a transformative vision? Through a bold Green Marshall Plan. By mobilizing public resources and strategic investments on a scale not seen since the mid-20th century, we can overhaul our energy grid, rebuild crumbling infrastructure, transition to renewable energy sources, and create millions of well-paying, union jobs.
Crucially, the economic activity generated by a Green Marshall Plan will help generate the revenue needed to entirely fund the Freedom Dividend. It is a virtuous cycle: cleaning our environment, rebuilding our infrastructure, and putting cash directly into the hands of the American people simultaneously.
Beyond Partisanship: A Pledge for 2028
This platform is not about left versus right, or Democrat versus Republican. It is entirely about survival, common sense, and the future of our democracy. The laws of physics do not care about political affiliation, and economic hardship does not check your voter registration card.
That is why, if elected to Congress in 2028, my commitment is unwavering. I will work with anyone—regardless of political party—across the entire political spectrum. Our goal will be clear and uncompromising: to pressure the executive branch and the president to formally declare both economic inequality and the climate emergency as true national emergencies.
A formal national emergency declaration unlocks the necessary tools, focus, and resources to mobilize a response commensurate with the threat. We cannot afford business as usual while our economic foundation fractures and our planet warms.
