Reflections from the South Reno Democratic HQ — A Vision for Northern Nevada

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last night, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with fellow candidates at the South Reno Democratic Headquarters.

Here is what I said:

I want to extend my gratitude to all who attended and especially to Barbara Twitchell for her grace and leadership in our community.

My name is Gamaliel Zavala Enriquez. I know my first name isn’t always easy to pronounce—my little sister, unable to say it as a child, gave me the nickname “Gamy,” and it’s stuck ever since.

Standing before you, I couldn’t help but reflect on what an unlikely journey this has been. I was born in the fields—the grandson of a Bracero who came to the U.S. during FDR’s war effort, and the son of a mother who also worked the land. Through social mobility, I became the first in my family to attend high school and college. After 9/11, I dreamed of being a public servant, but hardship forced me to leave school, and I faced homelessness and the criminal justice system. Like so many Americans, I got back up—with the help of SNAP, grit, and perseverance—and eventually earned my master’s degree from UNR.

I know this is going to be a tough race. A Democrat has never even come close to winning in our district. The odds seem stacked against us, with more Republicans and conservative-leaning Non-Partisans than Democrats in the CD2 voting pool. But I believe I bring something unique to this race—something that can unite us across party lines.

Here’s what sets me apart:

  1. Universal Policies: I champion cradle-to-grave policies for all. This isn’t about left or right—it’s about human dignity and freedom.

  2. Permanent Relief: I support $1,300 monthly relief for everyone—a plan that unites all sides in economic security.

  3. Real-World Experience: I know the struggles of homelessness, low-wage work, and the justice system, and I bring that lived perspective to the table.

  4. Proven Expertise: I hold advanced degrees in public administration, international relations, and political science.

  5. Grassroots Power: My campaign is powered by everyday people, inspired by leaders like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

  6. True Representation: As the only Mexican American and Latino candidate in this race, I bring an essential voice for immigrant justice and inclusion.

On the issues that matter most:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): I support a pause on high-impact AI development while we work towards an AI Bill of Rights and global safety standards. We must also implement a Universal Basic Income to help Americans weather the economic transformation ahead.

  • If Democrats Win the House: My priorities are comprehensive immigration reform, a Green Marshall Plan to fight climate change and create jobs, and Universal Basic Income. These are not just the right policies—they’re smart, practical, and will strengthen our democracy and economy.

I believe I represent both the challenges and the promise of America. My academic and professional experience, combined with my lived journey through adversity, make me the best candidate to fight for Northern Nevada in Congress. I am committed to bold, universal economic policies and to serving as a true representative of the people—not special interests or foreign lobbies.

Thank you for your support. Together, we can build a future worthy of America’s highest ideals.

In solidarity,

Gamaliel “Gamy” Zavala Enriquez Democratic Candidate for Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District
