How a Universal Basic Income Reflects the Spirit of Easter—and Nevada’s Future
Dear friends and neighbors,
This Easter season, as we reflect on themes of hope, renewal, and liberation, I want to share with you a vision for Nevada rooted in both progressive values and the spiritual principles of justice and dignity for all. My campaign is proud to champion a Universal Basic Income (UBI) — or what I call the Nevada Freedom Dividend and Nevada Permanent Fund — because I believe that every Nevadan deserves the opportunity to thrive.
What Is Universal Basic Income?
Universal Basic Income is simple: every Nevadan would receive $1,300 each month, no strings attached. This isn’t a handout — it’s a recognition of your inherent worth and a practical way to empower families. Your UBI dollars would go straight to essentials: groceries, rent or mortgage payments, child care, transportation, and the everyday costs that keep our lives running.
We can pay for this by making sure billionaires and giant corporations like Tesla, Amazon, and Nevada’s mining giants finally pay their fair share. For too long, these mega-corporations have profited from our state’s resources and hard-working people while contributing far less than what’s just. It’s time that prosperity is shared.
The Spiritual Case for Economic Justice
I draw inspiration from the progressive Christian tradition and Catholic social teaching, especially liberation theology — a worldview that places the needs of the poor, the working class, and the marginalized at the very center of our moral universe. Liberation theology teaches that true faith is expressed by standing with the oppressed and fighting for systems that give all people dignity and agency.
Just as Easter Sunday represents the triumph of hope over despair and the promise of new life, so too does Universal Basic Income offer a pathway out of poverty and insecurity for thousands of Nevadans. It’s a modern form of liberation — freeing us from the anxiety of living paycheck to paycheck, liberating parents to spend more time with their children, and empowering workers to seek better jobs or start new businesses without fear of destitution.
Why Now, and Why Nevada?
Nevada is a state of abundance. Our land is rich, our people are resilient, and our future can be bright — but only if we make bold choices. While billionaires and out-of-state corporations extract wealth from our communities, too many families are left struggling to afford the basics. The Nevada Freedom Dividend changes that balance. It returns the wealth generated in Nevada to Nevadans themselves, creating a permanent fund that ensures no one gets left behind.
Every dollar of UBI is an investment in our local economy. When families have more to spend, small businesses thrive. When parents aren’t forced to choose between a paycheck and caring for a sick child, our communities grow stronger. When young people see opportunity at home, they build their futures here, rather than leaving in search of hope elsewhere.
The Only Latino Independent Democrat in the Race
As the only Latino running as an independent Democratic candidate for Nevada’s Second Congressional District, my campaign is about more than politics — it’s about solidarity. I understand firsthand the struggles of immigrant families, of working people who feel voiceless in a system rigged against them. I’m running to give our communities a true champion in Washington — someone who will fight for policies that raise everyone up, not just the privileged few.
This Easter, Let’s Choose Renewal
Easter is a time to celebrate new beginnings, to look with hope towards the future, and to recommit ourselves to building a just world. A Universal Basic Income is more than a policy — it’s an act of faith in each other. It’s a statement that every Nevadan matters, that every child deserves a fair start, and that together we can create a community where prosperity is shared by all.
Let’s honor the spirit of Easter by working for a Nevada where no one is left behind. Let’s demand that those who profit most from our state give back to the people who make it great. Let’s build a future where freedom, dignity, and justice are more than words — they are the foundation of our everyday lives.
In solidarity and hope,
Gamy Enriquez,
Independent Democratic Candidate, NV-2
