Honoring Cinco de Mayo—A Battle for Justice Then and Now
Dear Friends,
This Cinco de Mayo, as we commemorate the historic Battle of Puebla, we are reminded not only of Mexico’s courageous stand against the French Empire, but also of the enduring fight for justice that continues to shape our communities here in the United States.
On May 5, 1862, outnumbered Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza defended Puebla against the mighty French army, sent to enforce debt payments that threatened Mexico’s sovereignty. This remarkable victory did not end the war, but it sent a powerful message: ordinary people, when united, can defy overwhelming odds and resist those who seek to impose injustice for the sake of profit and power. Cinco de Mayo is not just a date—it is a symbol of resilience and dignity in the face of exploitation.
Today, our battle is fought on a different front. Despite living in the world’s wealthiest nation, millions of Americans—especially Latino and Mexican American families—struggle against economic injustice. Wages remain stagnant, the cost of living rises, and wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few billionaires who profit while working people fall further behind. The same spirit that inspired the people of Puebla to stand up to foreign debt collectors inspires us to challenge the economic systems that perpetuate inequality in our own time.
That’s why I am running for Congress as the only Mexican American and Latino candidate committed to bold, universal, progressive policies from cradle to grave. Our campaign stands for a new vision: a society where everyone has the security and opportunity they deserve, regardless of their background or zip code.
The centerpiece of our platform is Universal Basic Income (UBI) for all, funded by billionaires paying their fair share. UBI means every American receives a guaranteed income that covers their basic needs, freeing families from the anxiety of poverty and empowering them to pursue education, entrepreneurship, and community life. It’s a policy rooted in dignity and fairness—a direct challenge to the economic injustice that holds us back.
Our cradle-to-grave approach includes universal healthcare, child care, senior care, and robust education—because justice is not just for some, but for all, at every stage of life. We believe in investing in people, not just profits; in building a society where no one is left behind.
As we reflect on the legacy of the Battle of Puebla, let us remember that history is made by those who dare to fight for what is right. The struggle for justice is not over—it continues in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and halls of government. Together, we can honor the past by forging a future where economic injustice is defeated, and dignity is restored for every family.
Join us in this new battle. Stand with us for bold change. This Cinco de Mayo, let’s celebrate not just a victory, but a vision for justice that endures.
With hope and determination,
Gamy Enriquez
Candidate for Congress
