Beyond Ideology: Lessons from the World’s Greenest Data Centers
To ensure the most effective and truly sustainable path for data center development in the U.S. and Nevada, it is essential to consult nonpartisan, evidence-based reports on ecological best practices—rather than relying solely on ideological arguments from either side of the political spectrum.
The world’s most ecologically friendly data centers are predominantly found in the Nordic region—specifically Iceland, Sweden, and Norway—where abundant grid-scale renewable energy and naturally cold climates create ideal conditions for sustainability. Facilities such as the Verne Campus in Iceland and EcoDataCenter in Sweden run entirely on renewables, achieve ultra-low energy usage, and implement innovative circular-economy systems that reuse server waste heat for community heating and industry. These approaches go far beyond incremental improvements and demonstrate what is possible when environmental priorities are backed by science, technology, and local resources.
Globally, cutting-edge data center designs are also emerging in marine and temperate zones, such as Shanghai’s HiCloud Underwater Data Center, which uses seawater for natural cooling and wind power for operations, drastically reducing its environmental footprint.
In the U.S., there are notable achievements as well—Meta’s Eagle Mountain facility in Utah and Switch’s Citadel Campus in Nevada have both adopted 100% renewable energy and advanced cooling technologies to minimize carbon emissions and water use. California’s Terra Ventures campus further pushes the envelope with a near net-zero design and a self-sufficient microgrid.
Learning from these global leaders—rather than defaulting to partisan narratives—will help Nevada and the broader U.S. make informed decisions. By analyzing unbiased reports and proven sustainability models, policymakers and stakeholders can avoid ideological traps and instead adopt practices rooted in real-world ecological success. This approach ensures that future data center growth aligns with the highest standards of environmental stewardship and community benefit.
