As a DoorDash driver and a candidate for Congress, I’ve had a front-row seat to these stories, delivered hot and fresh with every order. Today, I’m excited to spotlight one such story that captures the beating heart of our community: Taqueria Mendoza, a Reno gem that embodies determination, ingenuity, and the power of local dreams.
The Story & Community Resilience: Taqueria Mendoza’s Journey
When the world shut down in 2020, uncertainty loomed large. For many, the pandemic meant hardship, layoffs, and shuttered storefronts. But for others, it sparked innovation and a refusal to give up on hope. Taqueria Mendoza is a shining example.
Founded at the height of the pandemic, Taqueria Mendoza was born from necessity but built with love. The Mendoza family—armed with family recipes, an indomitable work ethic, and a dream to share their culture—launched their business against all odds. Where others saw obstacles, they saw opportunity. Their mission: to bring the flavors of their heritage to Reno, even when “open for business” signs were rare and uncertain.
The Double-Decker Truck: A Symbol of Grassroots Innovation
But this isn’t just another food truck story. Taqueria Mendoza’s double-decker truck, complete with rooftop seating, has become an icon around town. More than a clever way to stand out, it’s a testament to grassroots innovation and adaptability. While most mobile eateries operate from single-level trucks, the Mendoza family went higher—literally. Their rooftop dining area isn’t just a place to enjoy tacos; it’s a stage for community connection, turning every meal into an experience and every guest into a neighbor.
As a DoorDash driver, I’ve watched customers’ faces light up when they see the vibrant truck parked at a local gathering. I’ve delivered their birria tacos and carne asada plates to hungry families, healthcare workers on break, and construction crews taking a lunchtime pause. The truck’s rooftop has hosted impromptu celebrations, reunions of friends, and the laughter of kids who never outgrew the thrill of eating al fresco. Taqueria Mendoza isn’t just serving food—it’s dishing out hope and togetherness, proving that even in the toughest times, community spirit finds a way to rise.
A Driver’s Perspective: Northern Nevada’s Working Pulse
Traversing Reno, Sparks, and the wider Northern Nevada region as a gig worker, I’ve come to know the rhythms of our community in a unique way. Each delivery isn’t just a transaction; it’s a story. I’ve met small business owners fighting to keep payroll going, parents balancing remote work and childcare, and fellow drivers hustling to make ends meet. In Taqueria Mendoza, I see the DNA of Nevada’s resilience—a family determined to serve, adapt, and uplift others. It’s a spirit I recognize in countless small business stories across our district, from food trucks to family-run shops.
Policy & Vision: Building a Floor for All Nevadans
The lessons from Taqueria Mendoza extend far beyond delicious tacos. Their journey highlights an essential truth: When Nevadans are empowered with opportunity and support, they don’t just survive—they thrive. But too many of our neighbors are still one bad month away from disaster. That’s why I’m championing a Universal Basic Income (UBI), paid for by a Green Marshall Plan, as a cornerstone of my campaign.
Universal Basic Income: Supporting the Grit of Small Business Owners and Gig Workers
Small business owners and gig workers like myself are the backbone of our economy, yet we often face insecurity and volatility. A Universal Basic Income—an unconditional monthly payment to every Nevadan—would guarantee a basic economic floor, providing the breathing room to innovate, take risks, and build something lasting, just like the Mendoza family did. UBI isn’t about replacing hard work; it’s about honoring and supporting it, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks.
The Green Marshall Plan: Investing in Our Future
Paying for UBI requires bold, visionary policy—and that’s where the Green Marshall Plan comes in. Modeled after the historic Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after WWII, this approach would mobilize investments in sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, and green technology. By creating new jobs and supporting local businesses, we can foster an economy that’s both resilient and environmentally responsible. Imagine a future where rooftop seating at Taqueria Mendoza is powered by solar panels, or where new food trucks run on clean energy—this is the Nevada I envision.
